What is a sound bar?
A sound bar is a compact speaker system that is a solution to the growing problem of achieving multi-speaker (e.g. 5.1, 7.1, etc) surround sound without turning your living room into a jungle of wires!
Often supplied as just a large oblong speaker, the sound bar (or digital sound projector as some people with longer fingers than me call them) adds an air of mystery to your home cinema setup.
"Just how did that sound like an helicopter taking off behind me when there's no speaker there?"
This is where the magic of the soundbar comes in, as by bouncing soundwaves around your room it can simulate the effect of a 'true' surround system.
OK, ok - sounds too good to be true?
Well, there are some caveats. Must surround speaker systems require the room you are going to use the sound bar in to be of a conventional shape and position, to get the most out of one of these wireless surround systems it's best if your room is square and your TV is not situated in the corner of your room, i.e. it is a flat against the wall, which thankfully is the norm in these days of flat panel displays, no more CRT elephants in the corner of the room!
Also, despite what the manufacturers might state, you are never going to get as good a sound as having a classic wired speaker system, but for you the benefits of not having to faff around with wires around the back of your sofa, attracting looks of despair from your long suffering wife, might just be worth it.

Which soundbar is best?
Despite a large number of manufacturers getting involved in the production of soundbar systems over the last few years, the name that has pioneered digital sound projection, and continue in my eyes to produce the most realistic surround sound continue to be Yamaha, whose YSP range of soundbars are widely acknowledged as the brand to aspire to.
Indeed, I myself am the very happy owner of a Yamaha YSP-800 sound bar, which has been in operation for nearly five years now, and must be good as I've not been tempted to splash out on a 'proper' amplifier speaker system during that time!
